For week 33 of the United States – MLS 2023 tournament, Sporting KC won a great game against Real SL in their own stadium. The goals of the match for the local team were scored by Brayan Vera (35′ 2T) and Jefferson Savarino (43′ 2T). While the away goals were scored by Erik Thommy (3′ 1T, free kick), Johnny Russell (28′ 1T) and Alan Pulido (31′ 2T).
Johnny Russell won the applause with his brilliant finish 28 minutes into the first half. The forward broke the rival goal with a great goal over the left post, after receiving an assist from Logan Ndenbe.
Sporting Kansas City forward Alan Pulido wasted a chance to increase the lead after missing a penalty in the 76th minute of the second half.
Erik Thommy had a great performance. The Sporting Kansas City midfielder scored 1 goal and was encouraged to kick 2 times.
Another player who had a great game was Johnny Russell. The Sporting Kansas City attacker shone by scoring 1 goal and kicking 4 times.
The game was fought, but there were more infractions than the creation of fair play. There were several reprimands: Nemanja Radoja, Brayan Vera, Tim Melia and Zac MacMath. He was sent off for a straight red card, Justen Glad in the 2nd minute of the first half.
Real SL coach Pablo Mastroeni presented a 4-5-1 tactical layout with Zac MacMath in goal; Andrew Brody, Justen Glad, Brayan Vera and Bryan Oviedo on the defensive line; Braian Ojeda, Nelson Palacio, Andres Gomez, Jefferson Savarino and Diego Luna in the middle; and Cristian Arango in the attack.
For its part, Peter Vermes’ team came out with a 4-3-3 tactical layout with Tim Melia between the three sticks; Jake Davis, Dany Rosero, Robert Voloder and Logan Ndenbe on defense; Erik Thommy, Nemanja Radoja and Felipe Gutiérrez in the midfield; and Johnny Russell, Alan Pulido and Daniel Salloi up front.
Theodore Unkel was the referee chosen for the game at America First Field.
On the next date, Real SL will visit Colorado Rapids and Sporting KC will play at home against Minnesota United.
