Atlético Madrid recorded a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad in La Liga on Sunday. Antoine Griezmann took a penalty just before the end. Last Wednesday, the Madrilenians also narrowly defeated Feyenoord in the Champions League: 3-2.
Atlético took the lead in the 22nd minute through a goal by Samuel Lino. After a measured pass from Koke, the 23-year-old Brazilian shot the 1-0 untenable into the short corner.
Coach Diego Simeone’s team seemed to be on their way to victory, but saw Real Sociedad come alongside in the 73rd minute. Mikel Oyarzabal was given plenty of space and finished it off face to face with goalkeeper Jan Oblak: 1-1.
The teams seemed to be going home with a point, but the ball went to the spot in the 89th minute after a handball from a Real Sociedad defender. Griezmann claimed the ball and fired it low into the left corner from 11 yards.
The victory puts Atlético Madrid fourth with nineteen points from eight games. It is the fourth competition victory in a row for the Madrid team. Real Sociedad won the previous three games and is sixth with four points less. The Basque team has played one more game. Later in the evening, FC Barcelona will play against Granada.
