Simone Biles could hardly stop laughing on Friday after her unique performance at the Gymnastics World Championships. The American won her sixth world title in the all-around. She didn’t keep it dry on stage. “But believe me or not, there has also been something in my eye for hours.”
“I think this title feels as good as my first world title,” 26-year-old Biles said after her 21st world title in total. “I’m back in the same arena, the same city. That makes it special and emotional. It means the world to me.”
Ten years ago, Biles won her first gold World Cup medal in Antwerp. Now, after the new triumph in that city, she can call herself the most successful gymnast ever at the World Championships and the Olympic Games. The counter stands at 34 medals, one more than Vitali Cherbo from Belarus.
Despite the truckload of prizes she has already won, Biles’ tears flowed on stage. “I was emotional because I won my first here and now my sixth,” she said.
“But believe me or not, there’s something in my eye that’s been bothering me for four hours and I can’t get it out. So it was a combination of both.”

Biles had a minor stumble on floor
Afterwards, Biles looked back on her all-around event with satisfaction. “I’m happy, even after that little stumble on the floor,” she laughed. The four-time Olympic champion tripped over her own legs, but completed the exercise without any major mistakes.
Her exercise earned Biles 14,533 points, bringing her to a total score of 58,399 points: good for gold. “I just tripped,” the gymnastics legend said when asked about what happened.
“I’m actually really clumsy outside the gymnastics hall. But normally not during gymnastics. I was a bit surprised that it happened. In the end I was able to laugh at myself again.”
For Biles it is her second gold at this World Cup, after previously leading the American team to the title in the team competition. In Antwerp, Biles can expand her list of honors in the apparatus finals in the coming days.
