Ridouan Taghi’s defense challenged the court on Friday in the extensive Marengo liquidation trial. This means that they no longer have confidence in the independence of the judges.
Taghi’s lawyers say they no longer have confidence in the current judges, after they rejected a request to hear commando Sil A. as a witness.
A. previously stated that at the end of 2019 he was visited by two colleagues from the Commando Troops at the barracks in Roosendaal. They came to ask him for advice about a possible plan to eliminate Taghi, when the main suspect in the Marengo trial was still at large.
According to A., his colleagues had a conversation with, among others, a public prosecutor and representatives of the intelligence services AIVD and MIVD. They wanted to have Taghi arrested in Dubai or Iran. At that time it was not yet certain where Taghi was. He was later arrested in Dubai.
The Public Prosecution Service (OM) has always strongly denied A.’s story. “We obviously never considered kidnapping, eliminating or even killing Taghi,” a prosecutor said at a hearing some time ago.
Not the first time that court has been challenged
The court decided on Friday to reject A.’s request for a hearing because he did not attend the supposed consultation between the Public Prosecution Service and the AIVD, as described above.
Other judges must now consider this request for recusal and decide whether new judges should indeed be appointed. It is still unclear when this will happen.
The Marengo case has been going on for years and the judges have been challenged several times, all in vain.
