The Basque Popular Party is undergoing reforms. Next year there are elections in Euskadi and we have to make bobbin lace to show off in the looms of the Basque right. The PNV is not at its best, while EH Bildu is in effervescence. Therefore, starting this Wednesday and during the coming weeks, the party will work at an organic level, as confirmed by the National Directorate of the PP.
The first change has been confirmed from Euskadi. The president of the Basque PP, Carlos Iturgaiz, said this Tuesday that he will not continue leading the party because he has already met his objectives and the time has come to “take over.” This is what he expressed in an interview in Onda Vasca, where he detailed that when the party asked him to take the reins, the train was derailed and had to be put back on the track.

“The time has come, because the train is on the track. The Basque PP is strong, united and stable,” assured Iturgaiz, who will remain president of the parliamentary group until the elections are called in Euskadi, before Easter, he estimates. He made the decision himself and communicated it to the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo. He did not want to announce it publicly until after the elections and the inauguration of the ‘popular’ candidate.
The most popular names to replace him are Javier de Andrés, deputy for Álava, who is the most popular to be president of the Basque PP; and Laura Garrido, regional general secretary of the regional party.

In the PP there are still four congresses to be held: those of Euskadi, Catalonia, Asturias and La Rioja, since they had to be postponed with the early elections. Sources from Genoa confirm that it is more urgent to celebrate the one in Euskadi, which will be between the end of the year and the beginning of next year. That of Catalonia, for example, is not in such a hurry since there is not such a close electoral horizon.

Iturgaiz thus leaves the vacancy of the PP candidate for lehendakari after doing his “grain of sand” and having made the Basque PP go from “irrelevance to relevance”, since in the last elections on May 28 it has increased in councilors , in junteros and is key in the Guipuzkoa Boards, in the Vitoria City Council and in Durango, among others.
This Wednesday a regional Board of Directors will be held in Vitoria to convene the congress before Christmas. The deputy secretary of organization of the PP, Miguel Tellado, will attend, and then the deadlines for submitting candidatures will open.
