September is usually a bad month for employment due to the end of summer and the high tourist season in most of the country. Like other years, the number of people registered in public employment services increases compared to August and affiliation manages to mark a positive figure, although very small. Specifically, the data published this Tuesday by Labor and Social Security report 19,768 more unemployed and the gain of 18,295 average affiliates.
This represents an increase in unemployment of 0.73% compared to the previous month, a figure worse than the average of the last ten years (0.18%). However, unemployment continues to fall sharply in year-on-year comparison, by 7.46%, which means that the total number of unemployed, 2,722,468, is the lowest for the month of September since 2008.

Regarding affiliation, the monthly increase is only 0.09%, lower than the average of the last decade (0.13%). However, as with unemployment, employment is advancing strongly in year-on-year terms, 2.7% (544,508) and marks a record number of people affiliated with Social Security for the month of September: 20,724,796.
The sectors in which jobs are destroyed are the usual ones for this month. In the general regime, commerce (-40,024), hospitality (-32,223) and public administration (-39,503) lose workers, which dispenses with those hired to cover summer vacations. On the contrary, education registers a strong increase of 85,817 affiliates compared to the previous month (9.51%) due to the start of the school year. In a year-on-year comparison, practically all sectors gain employment, with the hospitality industry standing out above the rest, with 82,727 more average affiliates.

Something similar happens in the self-employed regime compared to the previous month, with more pronounced job losses in the hospitality industry (-2,521) and in commerce (-1,053), but these reductions also occur in a year-on-year comparison, with 1,338 fewer affiliates in hospitality and 16,159 fewer members in commerce. This could be due to a transfer of labor to the general regime.
This progress in the sectors is also reflected in unemployment, with a decrease compared to the previous month in agriculture (-2.06%), industry (-0.09%) and construction (-1.74 %), so it only increases by 0.98% in services. Unemployment also increases among the group without previous employment by 2.85%, which is bad data, since the increase is also year-on-year (1.76%).
This data is consistent with the increase in unemployment among those under 25 years of age compared to August, 9.07%, much higher than the 0.73% of the total population. In fact, among young people of this age, unemployment is only 2.51% lower compared to the year before. This may be due to the incorporation of more young people into the job search in September, either due to aspiring for a first job or due to the end of summer jobs, since the affiliation of those under 25 years of age also falls in comparison. with August.
