Son of a rich merchant, François lived a dissolute youth and participated in several wars before hearing the call of Christ. He then converted to poverty and, dressed in a homespun, set out to announce the Gospel. Joined by numerous companions, he founded the order of Friars Minor (the Franciscans). He was canonized in 1228.
