An American woman was seriously injured when a sedan hit her, throwing her directly into the path of a Cruise autonomous car.
The accident happened Monday evening around 9:30 p.m. at the corner of 5th Street and Market Street in San Francisco. The two vehicles were traveling side by side on 5th Street at the time of the event, according to video viewed by NBC Bay Area reporter Bigad Shaban.
Both cars were starting to move forward after the traffic light turned green when the sedan struck a woman who was not in a crosswalk. The latter, who had just crossed Market Street, found herself in the right lane and the Cruise car ran over her.
«No [véhicule autonome] then braked aggressively to minimize the impact. The driver of the other vehicle fled the scene and, at the request of police, the (autonomous vehicle) was held at the scene. Our deepest concern is the well-being of the injured person and we are actively working with police to help identify the responsible driver,” said Cruise spokesperson Navideh Forghani.
Having suffered significant injuries, the victim was taken to hospital to receive appropriate treatment. As of late Monday evening, his state of health was still unknown.
