Vitesse achieved a much-needed victory in the Gelderland derby against NEC on Sunday. Coach Phillip Cocu’s team won 1-3 thanks to two late goals.
In the first half, Vitesse already took the lead through a headed goal from captain Marco van Ginkel. Even before half time, NEC tied the score thanks to a well-deserved goal from Magnus Mattsson.
It seemed like it would end in a draw, but in the 89th minute Vitesse still took the win. Oroz cleverly extended a free kick with his head and brought the Arnhem fans into ecstasy.
Immediately after the goal, referee Sander van der Eijk stopped the match because a bottle and cups were thrown from the Nijmegen crowd. After the interruption, Million Manhoef took advantage of the space that NEC gave away. He ensured the 1-3 final score.
Vitesse can make excellent use of the victory. The 2017 cup winner had lost the last five Eredivisie matches. Vitesse now has six points and is therefore at least temporarily away from the bottom places.
The NEC of trainer Rogier Meijer is performing differently. The Nijmegen team has one point more than Vitesse and is therefore not doing much better than their rival.
