José Mourinho does not want to know that he is in crisis with AS Roma. The iconic trainer agrees that his team has started the season poorly, but also points to what he has already achieved in Rome.
Roma lost 4-1 at Genoa on Thursday evening. Mourinho’s team has won only two of the last fourteen league matches. This season, Roma is disappointingly sixteenth in Serie A with five points from six matches.
“I have never started a season so poorly in my coaching career, but I have also reached two European finals in a row with Roma for the first time in club history,” Mourinho said after the loss in Genoa.
The sixty-year-old Portuguese led Roma to the Conference League final two years ago, in which Feyenoord was defeated. Last season, Sevilla were too strong in the Europa League battle.
‘There’s no time to cry’
Mourinho also pointed out that Roma is dealing with a number of injuries. He also had to make an early substitution against Genoa. “We had 48 hours less rest than our opponent, so muscle injuries are no surprise,” he said. “But there is no time to cry. It hurts, but we are just working towards the next important match.”
According to Mourinho, things are simply not going well. “It is not only due to the absence of a number of defenders. Every shot is a goal against, every match. That is not a fault of goalkeeper Rui Patrício.”
AS Roma’s next match is Sunday, when number eight Frosinone visits. Four days later, ‘I Giallorossi’ play at home against the Swiss Servette FC in the Europa League.
