The Senate analyzes the documents of 33 judges: the ruling party seeks to advance with the appointment of Ana María Figueroa despite the Court's ruling

Senator Guadalupe Tagliaferri, from Together for Change, regretted that the ruling party has reached such an “absurd” point of failing to comply with the rulings of the Supreme Court.

“They did it with the co-participation of CABA and now again with the ruling against former judge Figueroa. But I remind you that the Supreme Court is the ultimate interpreter of our National Constitution, whether (Kirchnerists) like it or not,” she stated.

The pro-government senator Anabel Fernández Sagasti highlighted that all the documents under analysis “have continued with all the constitutional procedures” and pointed out that “the coverage of these vacancies will guarantee better access to Justice.”

Regarding former judge Figueroa, the senator from Mendoza remarked that “she followed the regulatory procedure.”

“There was not a single opposition to his application or his background. The agreement commission did not receive a single observation,” he said.

In reference to the decision of the Supreme Court, which determined that Figueroa stopped being a judge when she turned 75 because the process for her to continue in office was not complete, Fernández Sagasti denounced that the highest court “meddled” in prerogatives which are exclusive to the Senate.

“This is not the first time that a ruling has been approved after the applicant has turned 75 years of age. “It has happened during this period and during the period of Mauricio Macri’s government,” she argued.

After the tributes, the senators analyze the documents of 33 judges, among which that of the former Criminal Cassation magistrate, Ana María Figueroa, stands out.

The senator of San Luis, Adolfo Rodríguez Saa, was the first to speak to pay tribute to Orlando Britos, a politician and trade unionist who served on various occasions as a senator and national deputy.

“He was president of the PJ in San Luis from 1975 to 1982, he suffered persecution during the military dictatorship, but the most important thing was his participation in that group of prominent Peronists who signed a document in defense of human rights, which was delivered to the Commission of human rights defense that visited Buenos Aires,” he recalled.

After starting the session, Cristina Kirchner withdrew and left Claudia Ledesma Abdala from Santiago in her place.

The ruling party achieved a quorum to open the session thanks to the presence of Alberto Weretilneck, Magdalena Solari Quintana, Clara Vega – all with single-person blocs -, and María Eugenia Catalfamo, Guillermo Snopek Carlos Espínola and Edgardo Kueider, from the Unidad Federal bloc.

As happened in the Chamber of Deputies, leaders of the CGT and the Minister of Economy, Sergio Massa, announced that they will be present in the chamber during the debate on the project that eliminates the fourth category of the Income Tax.
