A gunman first opened fire in a house on Heiman Dullaertplein in Rotterdam-West on Thursday. The police initially reported that two people were seriously injured there.
Police reported at a press conference on Thursday evening that a 39-year-old woman and her 14-year-old daughter were shot there. The woman died and the daughter was seriously injured. Police later reported that the daughter died from the injuries.
After the shooting at the house, the same gunman opened fire in a classroom at Erasmus MC, a university medical center affiliated with Erasmus University Rotterdam. The school is more than a kilometer from the house where the first incident took place. The gunman shot and killed the 46-year-old teacher there.
Arrested suspect is known to the judiciary
A 32-year-old Rotterdam resident has been arrested for the shootings. That happened under the helipad of the Erasmus MC.
The man is known to the law and was convicted of animal abuse in 2021. His motive for Thursday’s incidents is unknown.
It is also unknown what his relationship was with the victims. It is clear that he lived close to the deceased woman. Police could not say whether they were immediate neighbors. It is known that the suspect was a student at Erasmus MC.
When asked whether the suspect had previously been rejected for a course at Erasmus MC, Rotterdam mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb said that that is a scenario “we are taking into account”.
Man also suspected of arson
The police previously reported that several deaths had occurred, but did not mention a number. Fire broke out in both the house and the Erasmus MC after the incidents. Both fires are under control. The arrested man is also suspected of starting both fires.
There may have been more victims in the incidents. The police are still investigating this.
