The military government in Burkina Faso says it has thwarted a coup attempt. A statement from the junta said the attempted coup took place on Tuesday. What exactly happened is not said.
Some of those involved in the coup attempt have been arrested. A government spokesperson says that an investigation is underway to find the people “who wanted to plunge our country into chaos”. The suspected coup attempt comes a day after demonstrators took to the streets in the capital Ouagadougou to voice their support for the transitional government.
The current government in Burkina Faso came to power last year through a coup. President Damiba was deposed, who in turn had staged a coup early last year. There is dissatisfaction in the West African country about the way jihadist groups from neighboring Mali are being combated.
The military junta says it plans to organize elections next year, with Burkina Faso expected to have a democratically elected government again from July.
