An attempt was made to set fire to a rainbow flag at a porch house in Amsterdam on Saturday evening. An explosive substance may have been used, a police spokesperson said. The flag was spared and the fire was quickly brought under control. The police are still looking for suspects.
The police received a report of a fire bomb at Elisabeth Boddaertstraat in Nieuw-West around 10:15 p.m. A rainbow flag hanging on one of the facades would have been the target, the spokesperson told the Amsterdam channel AT5. Local residents say the arson was accompanied by a homophobic shouting match.
The police are busy looking for a suspect and are asking witnesses to come forward. It is also still being investigated what substance was used to set the flag on fire. Photos show that there are remains of an apparently explosive substance in front of the house.
According to a witness, red caps that may have come from cobras were also found near the incident. These heavy fireworks are used to attack homes more often. The forensic investigation has made them safe.
