A video obtained by CNN and captured by a passerby shows the couple in the back of an SUV.
The Carter Center then confirmed their visit in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“It’s a great day for President Carter and his wife to drive to the Plains Peanut Festival,” it reads.
Beautiful day for President & Mrs. Carter to enjoy a ride through the Plains Peanut Festival! And just a week before he turns 99.

Jimmy Carter, who turns 99 on October 1, has been receiving hospice care since February.
His wife, Rosalynn Carter, 96, struggles with neurodegenerative disorders.
In an interview with People magazine in August, the couple’s grandson, Josh Carter, indicated that his grandparents, who have been married for 77 years, were entering their “final chapter.”
Born in Plains, Jimmy Carter served as President of the United States from 1977 to 1981.
