Outgoing State Secretary Van der Burg of Justice urgently needs shelters for asylum seekers. In a letter to the municipalities, he urges them to quickly make places available.

From tomorrow, Van der Burg needs 450 reception places, of which 250 are for unaccompanied minor asylum seekers (amvs). From Monday he wants another 750 places, of which 300 for unaccompanied minors.

He emphasizes that many asylum seekers report to the center in Ter Apel every day. The number is always the highest in September, but this year, according to Van der Burg, there are above-average numbers: regularly more than 250 per day.

Preferably not in hotels

In extreme cases, asylum seekers must be accommodated in hotels, for example, but Van der Burg wants to prevent that. That is why he now urgently needs extra shelter places from the municipalities.

The State Secretary wants to hear by tomorrow at the latest what the municipalities do with his appeal. He adds that the need will remain high even after next week.
