Raymond van Barneveld and Danny Noppert qualified for the second round of the World Series of Darts Finals on Friday evening. De Hagenaar beat Jeff Smith 6-2 in AFAS Live in Amsterdam, Noppert defeated fellow countryman Dirk van Duijvenbode 6-4.
Van Barneveld took an important break in the match with Smith in the fifth leg and took a 3-2 lead. The native of The Hague also won three legs afterwards and recorded a 6-2 victory. It was not at all convincing for Van Barneveld, who achieved an average of only 84.47.
The five-time world champion has been absent from the tournament in Amsterdam for the past three years. The 56-year-old from The Hague will meet reigning world champion Michael Smith in the second round on Saturday. Striking detail: if Van Barneveld is eliminated, he will fly directly to Cyprus, where he will get married on Tuesday.
Noppert defeated Van Duijvenbode later in the evening. In a high-level duel – both players scored more than 100 points per three darts – “The Freeze” triumphed 6-4. Noppert, number nine in the world, thanks this, among other things, for two finishes of over a hundred. In the second round, the Frisian will meet the Englishman Nathan Aspinall.
Michael van Gerwen throws for the first time on Saturday. The Dutchman, like the other players from the top 8 in the world, was allowed to skip the first round. Van Gerwen has already won the tournament four times before. The World Series of Darts Finals lasts until Sunday. The results do not count towards the world rankings.
