Forty civilians have been killed in an airstrike in the Sudanese town of Nyala. This was reported by the French news agency AFP and several Arabic channels. Nyala is located in the Darfur region and is the second largest city in the country.
Explosives were found in two markets and several city districts. According to residents of the city, the airstrikes were carried out by government forces, which are trying to oust the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF is said to control parts of the city.
In recent weeks, violence has flared up in the Darfur region between government forces and the RSF. They’ve been fighting each other for five months. In the first weeks, the fighting mainly took place in the capital Khartoum, but fighting is now taking place throughout the country. At least 7,500 Sudanese have been killed by violence since April.
Many civilian casualties
Yesterday, 17 civilians were killed in an attack in the city of Omdurman, near Khartoum. On Sunday, 51 people were killed in an airstrike on the capital. Civilian casualties are also common in Darfur. Sixty people lost their lives there in the first week of August.
The warring parties have agreed to a ceasefire several times, but it has been violated time and time again. Millions of citizens have become dependent on humanitarian aid. More than five million Sudanese have fled, most within their own country.
