It is with great pleasure that I no longer sign this weekly editorial blog as ‘acting editor-in-chief’, but as ‘editor-in-chief’. Today I, Lindsay Mossink, will tell you more about my plans.
Are we going to do everything differently? Certainly not. The NU.nl visitor wants to keep up, understand the news and contribute to it. We have laid a solid foundation for this in recent years. Our news editors report the latest news every moment of the day, we explain the news with recognizable explainers and you can join the discussion on the NUjij response platform.
Now it’s time for us to talk more about the creators. Why don’t we allow you to build a relationship with our experts more often? Visitors to digital platforms increasingly want to know the person behind a production. This gives confidence in the considerations that are made.
Our Formula 1 podcast De Boordradio is so successful for good reason. NU.nl has experts in-house who know certain topics backwards and forwards. Experts who have enough substantive knowledge to appeal to a large group of regular followers.
Take the climate editorial alone: the knowledge of climate reporters Rolf Schuttenhelm and Jeroen Kraan is unparalleled. I am convinced that greater visibility of our expertise on major news topics will contribute to the trust you have in us. That is why we are looking for more forms to convey that knowledge.
Lindsay Mossink is editor-in-chief of NU.nl
Lindsay has been editor-in-chief of NU.nl since this week. She is therefore ultimately responsible for the editorial staff and the journalistic direction of NU.nl. She writes an editorial blog every Sunday, which gives you a look behind the scenes.
Then I know who is telling it
When I look to the future, there are quite a few challenges. Think of the opportunities, but certainly also the threats, of artificial intelligence (AI).
We have an editorial team that gets excited about trying new things. That is in the NU.nl DNA. So we also test with AI. But AI cannot build a bond with the audience. That is also why it is important to step forward and say: people are behind this and they know an awful lot. They can help you if you are concerned about certain issues that dominate the news.
In five years’ time the Internet will probably be even less clear or reliable than it is today. NU.nl must be a beacon of trust in such an era. That’s where you can go, that’s where the information is reliable and that’s where I know who is telling it.
I think it is important that we are a place where you learn about the news and where you are surprised while finding a connection. That only works if you manage to shorten the distance. I want to turn the many passers-by into fans. Fans of the brand, but certainly also of our journalists.
