The Algerian Ministry of Defense has responded for the first time to the shooting death of two French-Moroccan tourists. The Algerian coast guard is said to have warned the jet skiers several times when they sailed into territorial waters.
It concerned a group of four tourists who left the Moroccan seaside resort of Saïdia last Tuesday by jet ski. The coast guard opened fire and shot dead two members of the group. A third member, who was said to have been sailed over and then shot in the leg, was arrested. The fourth managed to escape.
According to Algeria, the jet skiers ignored warnings and attempted to flee using dangerous maneuvers. Warning shots followed. When the jet skiers did not seem to care, targeted shots were fired.
The shooting has sparked anger in Morocco after a video emerged of a lifeless body floating in the sea.
Mohammed Kissi, the jet skier who managed to escape, told Moroccan news site Le360 that the group was on its way to a coastal town for dinner. On the way back they ran out of petrol and drifted towards the Algerian coast. Kissi managed to swim back to Moroccan waters himself. He was picked up by the Moroccan police and taken back to Saïdia.
According to Kissi, his brother Bilal, one of the victims, spoke to the soldiers and the soldiers clearly saw that they were unarmed civilians.
