AS Roma has announced the arrival of Romelu Lukaku. The thirty-year-old Belgian striker is rented from Chelsea for one year.
The transfer has been in the air for a while. On Tuesday, Lukaku landed in Italy in the presence of Roma chairman Dan Friedkin, where he was met by a frenzied crowd. Images of Lukaku appeared at Roma training on Thursday morning.
Chelsea reportedly receives a rental fee of more than 5 million euros for Lukaku. AS Roma also takes over the full salary of about 7.5 million euros from the English top club.
At Chelsea, the top striker has been declared superfluous, after he had transferred from Internazionale in 2021 for the astronomical amount of 113 million euros. The return to familiar soil – Lukaku was already on the payroll at ‘The Blues’ between 2011 and 2014 – turned out not to be a success.
Lukaku second most expensive player ever
He was unable to break any pots in the 2021/2022 year, after which he spent last season on a rental basis at Internazionale. Lukaku’s contract with Chelsea runs until the summer of 2026.
At ‘Il Giallorossi’, the ‘Red Devil’ will again work together with trainer José Mourinho. The two know each other from their time at Chelsea and Manchester United.
Lukaku is the second most expensive player of all time if you add up all the transfer fees paid for him. Only Neymar (400 million euros) who left for Al Hilal cost more.
