President Andrés Manuel López Obrador gave the banner of return to school for 24 million children and adolescents of basic, upper secondary and higher level throughout the country, in the framework of the crisis surrounding the distribution of textbooks free.

Leticia Ramírez, Secretary of Public Education, presented the back-to-school ceremony in the morning with links to different entities, starting with Mexico City where the head of Government Martí Batres Guadarrama opened the activities.
The president reported that one million 400 thousand students returned to work, with the distribution of almost 4 million free textbooks.

“These books are a right of girls and boys, and are a factor of social cohesion, cultural cohesion, national identity and great support for families and parents,” said Batres Guadarrama.
After multiple civil groups demonstrated against the distribution of the new SEP textbooks in states such as Chiapas, the State of Mexico and Quintana Roo – as a result of the identification and dissemination of some errors, as well as the pointing out of the presence of “communist ideology” in the educational material- Batres reported that the return to classes will begin based on the new educational material.

Despite the fact that the governors of Durango, Guerrero, Michoacán, Baja California, Quintana Roo and Tamaulipas celebrated the start of classes with the new pedagogical guides, the governor of Chihuahua, María Eugenia Campos, and the governor of Coahuila, Miguel Riquelme Solís, maintained their rejection of the distribution of textbooks in their demarcations based on the resolution of the minister of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation Luis María Aguilar, for which they head the list of federal entities in which the new educational plan will not be implemented within the framework of the start of classes at the basic level.
The Secretary of Public Education defended the new material during the morning conference to inaugurate the new 2023-2024 school year and declared that the educational perspective during this administration is “deeply humanist, scientific, multicultural, and inclusive.”
