Every Sunday acting editor-in-chief Lindsay Mossink tells you more about our work. This time it’s about a question we often ask: what does this news mean to you?
Every morning, our interaction editors select the best questions from the thousands of comments you post under our articles. We call that selection ‘The 10’. We share that list with the entire editorial team. In ‘The 10’ we collect relevant questions and interesting perspectives on topics that were talked about a day earlier.
Then we’ll get started with that. This week, energy company Vandebron’s decision to charge customers for returning power to the network caused a lot of commotion. “Is a home battery perhaps a smart move if you have solar panels?” you asked on NUjij. Climate reporter Rolf Schuttenhelm answered this question in our new section ‘In 100 words’.
Sometimes there are so many questions about a topic that a question and answer session is more appropriate. For example, about the severe weather in many European holiday countries.
For us this is an important part of our work. It is our role to find answers to relevant questions about the news.
Lindsay Mossink is acting editor-in-chief of NU.nl
Lindsay is ultimately responsible for the editorial and journalistic course of NU.nl. She writes an editorial blog every Sunday, which gives you a look behind the scenes.
You also help each other
But in addition to bringing and explaining the news, we also help you make choices. In our profession, this is called service journalism. These are very practical stories, about the return journey after a holiday, sunscreen or flying ants.
Colleagues Elise Vermeeren and Sarah Sitanala have fully devoted themselves to this form of journalism at NU.nl. For them, not only the questions you ask are a source of inspiration, but also, for example, the time of year or what is going on in the world.
When it comes to very practical subjects, I see that you also help each other on your way. Like this week during Talk along sessions about the cost of groceries and saving tips for a festival.
We see that you appreciate this form of journalism. That is why we will soon start a separate section (starting in the menu of our app) where you will find all our practical stories and tips together. We just don’t have a definitive name for that section yet. Ideas? Be sure to let us know in the comments.
