In Goetsenhoeven near Tienen in Belgium, a 91-year-old man has died from injuries sustained in an attack. Yesterday, a 37-year-old man broke into a residential care home and assaulted the man and an 89-year-old woman, allegedly with a bedpan. Both were taken to hospital, where the man succumbed to his injuries.
The 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and attempted murder. According to his lawyer, contact with him is difficult. “I don’t think he understands everything well,” she told the Belgian news agency Belga. He was “very confused” at his arraignment and, according to the lawyer, does not seem to understand that someone died as a result of his actions.
He was recently admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Brussels, but also discharged. It is not clear how he ended up in Goetsenhoven and why he entered the building, the lawyer says to Belgian media.
According to her, he now first needs help and must be psychologically examined. If this shows that he is less responsible due to his psychological problems, the sentence may be adjusted accordingly. “But that is still too early now,” said the lawyer.
