National coach Sarina Wiegman will compete with England against Colombia in the quarter-finals of the World Cup. The South Americans were 1-0 too strong for Jamaica in the last sixteen on Tuesday.
Catalina Usme scored the only goal of the game in Melbourne. The attacker hit six minutes after the break after a high cross from Ana Guzman over the Jamaican defense.
It was Jamaica’s first goal against at this World Cup. In the remainder of the second half, both countries hit the post, but no more goals were scored in the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium. Colombia reached the last eight at a World Cup for the first time.
Wiegman already qualified for the quarterfinals with England on Monday. The European champion escaped via penalties against Nigeria. England and Colombia will face each other in the last eight on Saturday. The game in Sydney starts at 12.30 (Dutch time).
The last eighth final of the World Cup is scheduled for later on Tuesday. It goes between France and Morocco and starts at 13:00 in Adelaide. The winner of that game will face Australia.
The Netherlands will play against Spain in the quarterfinals on Friday. The team of national coach Andries Jonker won 2-0 against South Africa on Sunday. Spain-Netherlands starts at 03:00 (Dutch time) in the New Zealand capital Wellington.
