Former minister and CDA prominent Mona Keijzer has canceled her own party membership. Her spokesperson confirmed this to the ANP news agency on Friday after reporting by RTL News.
The eventual leadership of Nijmegen mayor Hubert Bruls was the last straw for Keijzer, reports RTL Nieuws. She would have criticized CDA chairman Hans Huibers about this, but he would have dismissed her opinion.
Huibers and CDA minister Hugo de Jonge (Public Housing) would both have made a case for Bruls’ leadership. The mayor of Nijmegen tells Omroep Gelderland that he regrets Keijzer’s departure. He leaves his own political future in the middle.
Until September 2021, Keijzer was (caretaker) State Secretary for Economic Affairs in the Rutte III cabinet. Outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte expelled her from the cabinet because she was very critical of the corona pass.
The State Secretary found it difficult to explain that people with a pass had to show that they had been vaccinated against or tested for the corona virus.
A minister can be against a proposal from the cabinet, but it is unusual for that person to speak out about it. Ultimately, a cabinet member must accept if the Council of Ministers decides otherwise. Keizer did not.
