Germany captain Alexandra Popp does not understand Germany’s elimination at the World Cup. The veteran did score in the last group match against South Korea (1-1), but that was not enough for a place in the last sixteen.
“I honestly can’t comprehend it yet,” said 32-year-old Popp on Thursday after the elimination. “I can’t say right now what it was because I just don’t understand it myself.” The German team stranded for the first time in the group stage of the World Cup.
The team of national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg failed to win against South Korea in the third group match. Due to the 1-1 draw and the earlier defeat against Colombia (2-1), the two-time world champion finished third in the group.
Voss-Tecklenburg took responsibility afterwards for the disappointing results at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. “We fought and tried everything well into injury time, but at the end you have to conclude that our performance was not enough to move forward.”
The German national coach, who still has a contract until the summer of 2025, did not comment on a possible departure. “I shouldn’t shout something too quickly. I need time to process this and now I’m taking it up for the team first,” said the 55-year-old coach afterwards at the German TV channel ZDF. “We have to face this, and me first.”
Top player Jule Brand was also disappointed by the level of her team. “We were motivated and looking forward to it, but we didn’t manage to show that on the pitch. We didn’t create the chances we needed.”
