In the state of northern Mexico, patrols have been intensified by federal authorities, since it is one of the main states where all kinds of drugs are transported on their way to the United States.
Authorities have seized everything from liquid methamphetamine to thousands of fentanyl pills, such as the one announced on July 9, when the United States Department of Justice reported on “an important operation” with its Mexican counterparts in which they managed to dismantle a drug trafficking network and seized 120,000 pills of the synthetic opioid.
According to the authorities, the dismantling of this “prolific transnational drug trafficking organization” operated in the municipality of Nogales, along the border between the two countries.
“Transnational drug trafficking organizations represent an unprecedented threat to the public safety of both the United States and Mexico,” said US Attorney General Merrick B. Garland, adding that this coordinated operation “demonstrates the success of our countries” to combat the threat of drug trafficking.

According to InSight Crime, three large drug trafficking cartels operate in Sonora, which dispute territory because the entity borders the United States and is located in the Gulf of California.
The US media reported that at the beginning of 2022, the different factions of the Sinaloa Cartel, such as Los Chapitos and that of Ismael El Mayo Zambada; as well as the criminal organization of the Caborca Cartel and the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) were in a strong dispute over this entity.
“Murders increased in the state of Sonora, located in northwestern Mexico. Behind the violence are the alleged return of an old drug trafficker, the internal disputes of the Sinaloa Cartel and the offensive by the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel,” the outlet reported in a publication dated January 7, 2022.
