France defeated Brazil at the World Cup on Saturday. Wendie Renard, who returned to the French selection for this tournament, scored the winning goal in the entertaining game.
France played a disappointing draw against Jamaica in the first match and had clearly recovered against Brazil. After 17 minutes, the French took the lead through a goal by Eugénie Le Sommer.
In the second half Brazil insisted and that resulted in promising situations. France held on well, but had to collect the equalizer fifteen minutes after the break through the Brazilian Debinha.
The teams did not intend to leave the field with a point, which resulted in a blistering last half hour. Wendie Renard, of all people, who returned to the national team under national coach Hervé Renard, scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute.
France and Brazil are contenders for the world title. While France lost points in the first game, Brazil simply settled with Panama. Panama and Jamaica will play against each other later in the day.
