The towing of the burning freighter near Terschelling to a place north of Schiermonnikoog has been canceled for the time being, Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) reports. According to RWS, the smoke development from the fire and the current wind direction currently make this operation impossible.
During the towing operation, the wind pulls over the tugboat, which entails risks. “The safety and health of the crew is always paramount,” said RSW. That is why the burning cargo ship will not be towed for the time being.
The wind will continue to blow from the southwest in the coming days, which means that towing may not be possible for a few days. “Until then, the ship will remain in its current position.”
According to RWS, the condition on the ship is constantly monitored by experts such as naval engineers, experts in the field of hazardous substances, firefighters and nautical specialists. This is done in collaboration with experts from RSW and the Coast Guard.
