The coastguard sent a yacht away on Friday morning that came close to the burning freighter near Terschelling to look at the fire, a spokesman said. “Occasionally we see disaster tourists. That hinders the relief efforts.”
The coast guard also calls on people not to call the general number of the coast guard center with questions, comments and suggestions about the fire.
“Although well-intentioned, the operation is affected by this and it hinders any emergency lines. So the request is not to call for these matters,” the coastguard writes on the live blog about the fire.
A team of specialists is assessing the situation and determining the best plan of action. The ship, the Fremantle Highway, is currently located 17 kilometers north of Terschelling.
