Consumers were just as negative about the economy in July as the previous month. They have been pessimistic for four years without interruption.
Both the opinion of the economic climate and the willingness of consumers to buy did not change, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands on Thursday. In June, consumer confidence showed a slight deterioration for the second month in a row, after six months of improvements.
Consumer confidence is low and that is usually not a good sign for the economy. Confidence reached an all-time high in January 2000 and an all-time low in September and October 2022. Statistics Netherlands started taking measurements in 1986.
Consumers’ opinion of the economic situation in the coming twelve months was slightly more negative, but their opinion of the economic situation in the past twelve months was slightly less negative. Consumers also thought it was a less favorable time for making large purchases.
