Edwin van der Sar has left intensive care. The former Ajax director was admitted to the ICU a week and a half ago after he had a cerebral hemorrhage during his holiday in Croatia.
“First of all, we would like to thank everyone for all the nice and supportive messages,” Van der Sar writes on Tuesday Twitter. “I am pleased to announce that I am no longer in intensive care.”
“I’m still in the hospital. Next week I hope to go home and take the next step in my recovery!”
With his message, 52-year-old Van der Sar made himself heard for the first time since he was admitted to intensive care. The former goalkeeper suffered a cerebral hemorrhage in Croatia on Friday 7 July and spent a week in a hospital in Split.
A week ago, his wife Annemarie reported that Van der Sar is able to communicate. The 130-time Orange international had been in intensive care in the Netherlands since Friday evening.
Van der Sar announced about a month and a half ago that he is stepping down as director of Ajax. The team from Amsterdam had an extremely difficult season and grabbed third place in addition to a Champions League ticket.
