Ukraine claims to have shot down 20 Russian drones and two cruise missiles
Ukraine said on Thursday it shot down 20 Russian drones and two cruise missiles in a third night of attacks directed, among other things, at its capital, Kiev. “We successfully carried out an air defense operation,” said air force spokesman Yuri Ihnat. These devices “entered the capital from different directions”, he said. Debris fell in five neighborhoods, he added, reporting that a 19-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man had been hospitalized.
The Iranian-made Shahed attack drones were shot down “mainly in the Kiev region”, the Ukrainian Air Force said in a separate statement on Telegram. Two people were injured in the Darnytsky district “as a result of falling debris”, wrote Serhi Popko, the head of Kiev’s military administration, on Telegram. It was not known if they were the same two people.
Ukrainian air defense also destroyed two Kalibr cruise missiles overnight, the Ukrainian Air Force said on Telegram. She also claimed that an Iskander-M ballistic missile had been fired from Crimea, a peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014. Information was “still being clarified” regarding this missile.
