The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) seized some 8,000 illegal slimming pills during searches. The pills are sold under the name Iomax and contain the hard drug amphetamine.
The finds were made during a campaign week aimed at trading in these types of pills. Detectives and inspectors from the NVWA searched three homes and two business premises. Everywhere they came across illegal slimming pills.
Most of the pills were found in a business premises in the Haarlem region. There were 4500 tablets and 27 packages of Iomax ready for shipment. The owner of the building is suspected of large-scale trade in the substance. At his home, 20,000 euros in cash was seized.
Two people were also arrested in Rotterdam, one of whom was also arrested last year for illegal trade in slimming pills. This time more than 1800 Iomax capsules and steroids were seized.
The NVWA strongly advises against buying or using slimming pills such as Iomax. Even after a single use, serious side effects such as palpitations, chest pain, nausea, headache and a rushed feeling can occur. Due to the use of Iomax or similar pills, several people have already ended up in hospital with a cerebral hemorrhage.
Amphetamine is speed. The characteristics of those kinds of hard drugs is that they take away your feeling of hunger. The substance ensures that your body burns energy, while no energy enters the body.
NVWAIllegal slimming pills
Illegal slimming pills are not available in stores, only online. People who have bought these pills are requested to report to the NVWA and to tell them where they got the pills from. In this way, the authority wants to protect consumers. Any remaining pills can be handed in as small chemical waste at a municipal recycling centre.
