It is well known that alcohol is bad for our health, but what about drinking in the sun at high temperatures? Does alcohol have a different effect on our body as a result?
You’ve probably heard that you get drunk faster when it’s hot. But according to Steven Biemans of the Trimbos Institute, we don’t know if that’s really the case. “In any case, no research has ever been done on it,” he says.
It is clear, however, that you are more likely to become dehydrated and more prone to dizziness when it is hot. “It may well be that people have the feeling that they get drunk faster,” Biemans thinks.
Sigrid Sijthoff, doctor and owner of addiction center Kick your Habits, thinks it’s not just the heat. “When it’s hot, you get thirsty faster and you drink more.”
Alcohol has an effect on your kidneys. The more you drink, the less well the organ can do its job, so you have to urinate more. “And the more you pee, the faster you dehydrate and get thirsty. And so you start drinking more beer, for example,” says Sijthoff. “Moreover, there is a good chance that you will sweat more and that will also help you dehydrate further.”
Keep drinking water in addition to that beer
That is why it is always, but especially during hot days, important to keep drinking water in addition to that beer. Biemans: “Our advice is not to drink on hot days, to limit it to one glass or at least to reduce it. And if you do decide to drink, at least try to drink a glass of water or soft drink next to it. “
On an empty stomach, the alcohol hits a lot harder than after a big plate of dinner.

What also doesn’t help, according to Biemans, is that people sit on the terrace more often during the day than in the evening. “This makes it more likely that you have eaten less. Your stomach is therefore emptier and the alcohol therefore hits a lot harder than after a large plate of dinner. The nachos or portion of bitterballen to absorb the appetite are often insufficient to cope with such an to prevent spikes.”
Although we know that alcohol is bad for our health, the danger is still underestimated. The Health Council advises not to drink, or not to drink more than one glass a day. Because even that one glass can be harmful.
It’s more fun with a drink
Whether hot or cold, alcohol can do a lot of damage. However, that realization seems to be slowly sinking in. “After all, we have known for a long time that alcohol is bad and yet we continue to drink,” says Sijthoff. “We are aware that it is toxic stuff, but we have taught ourselves that it is cozy and that we cannot live without it.”
It does not matter whether you exchange that cold beer for a mixed drink. A glass of vodka spa red (because fresh) is just as bad. Fortunately, there are more and more non-alcoholic options, also on the terrace. “Look at the wide range of non-alcoholic beer in the supermarket; that used to be one bottle, now it’s a whole shelf.”
What also helps is that the advice on how many glasses per week has been tightened up over the years. According to Sijthoff, it often takes a while before that awareness is felt in society.
“And it’s not like we have to stop drinking altogether,” says the doctor. “We just have to teach our body that it can also be cozy without or with less. And not unimportant: an evening without alcohol can also be very pleasant. Just think of how refreshed you wake up the next morning.”
