Viaplay has drawn a line through some domestic drama productions, AD reports. For example, the streaming service has withdrawn from a project by writer Saskia Noort. This also applies to Roombeek, a series about the fireworks disaster in Enschede.
The producers confirm that the streaming service has canceled the series. Hunting for Jasper S., a series about the murder of Marianne Vaatstra, and the drama series De Schulde also have to find another financier.
The Dutch branch of Viaplay says the series have been canceled due to a “new operating model”. “Each management team is reviewing its own organization. But as this work is in progress, no further details can be given at this stage,” a spokesman told the newspaper.
CEO Anders Jensen was recently forced to leave Viaplay because the company is doing poorly internationally. Viaplay has lost 60 percent of its stock market value and has now lowered its financial expectations.
In the Netherlands, the model of the streaming service would be profitable. This is mainly because the focus here is on sports. For example, Viaplay broadcasts Formula 1 races.
According to Jim Leeuw, TV and video expert at Wavemaker, it is quite possible that Viaplay has to make tough choices. But Leeuw does not expect the streaming service to disappear from the Netherlands, he previously told NU.nl.
