They were sending money to Daesh and would be preparing highly visible attacks.
Arrested in Germany this Thursday seven men suspected of having founded an Islamist terrorist organization in this countryand having direct contact with the Islamic State group.
Together with one of its branches, they would be preparing highly visible attacks. It is believed that they were now studying possible scenarios and trying to buy weapons. Five are from Tajikistan, one from Kyrgyzstan and one from Turkmenistan.
They entered as refugees
“The men they entered Germany shortly after the war in Ukraine started in the spring of 2022“, explained Herbert Reul, Minister of the Interior of the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia. “Unfortunately, we see that there are black sheep among the enormous number of people who are fleeing the war and seeking refuge here, but that also shows that our Security authorities are vigilant and have this on their radar.”
The importance of cutting off funding
The detainees had collected money that they transferred to Daesh since April last year.
“The threat of Islamist terrorism remains very serious, as can be seen from today’s arrests,” stressed German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser. “Once again, it was about the preparations for a terrorist attack, but above all, also about the financing of terrorism. That is precisely what we have set out to do, to end the financing of terrorist organizations at an early stage. That is why I am very satisfied with the success of the arrests.”
Arrested a couple in the Netherlands
German investigators have worked closely with authorities in the Netherlands, where there have been two other arrests: those of a young man from Tajikistan and his wife, who have lived there since last year and who allegedly belonged to the same jihadist cell. They would have received orders to attack, according to the Prosecutor’s Office, although still, as in the case of their partners in Germany, they did not have a specific plan.
