The Orange women won the loaded practice match against the boys from De Volewijckers on Sunday morning. The team of national coach Andries Jonker was behind closed doors in Zeist 2-1 too strong for the JO18-1 of the amateur club from Amsterdam-Noord.
Esmee Brugts gave the Orange the lead, after which De Volewijckers equalized. Danielle van de Donk eventually gave the Netherlands the victory. In the Netherlands, almost the entire selection came into action.
There was a lot to do about the match of the Orange Women against the boys team of De Volewijckers. The management of the KNVB decided to shield the match from the public and media, for fear of reputational damage in the event of a possible defeat. There would also be no announcements about the result.
That was against Jonker’s wishes. The national coach said not to take the result seriously, because once there are physical differences between women and boys. The match also came out of his sleeve. He wanted the Orange Women to be tested on defense for ninety minutes towards the upcoming World Cup.
In the end, Jonker agreed to a closed training match, which was played on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the KNVB Campus in Zeist. The KNVB shielded the field well, according to a visit from NU.nl. The training complex was guarded by security guards and huge banners were hung along all fields.
After the victory, the KNVB decided to communicate the result of the match. With the victory, the Dutch are confident towards the World Cup, which will be held in Australia and New Zealand next month. For the Netherlands, the tournament starts on July 23 with a match against Portugal. World champions United States and Vietnam are the other opponents in the group stage.
