The Judiciary ordered this Tuesday the immediate capture of the former chief of staff, Betssy Chávez, accused of participating in the failed self-coup of former president Pedro Castillo (2021-2022). The Permanent Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court, in charge of Judge César San Martín, annulled the order to appear with restrictions against the former premier and declared the fiscal requirement of 18 months of preventive detention well founded.

In his resolution, the magistrate confirmed the mandate to appear against former ministers Willy Huerta (Interior) and Roberto Sánchez (Tourism), also identified as co-authors of the frustrated self-coup, who may not be absent without authorization or communicate with the other investigated, among other measures .

Through a live statement on TikTok, number two in the Castillo administration agreed to the order and stated that he was at his home in Tacna, where he awaited his capture. “I am going to wait for the Police to come and go with them to where they should go. I was thinking of going with mobility to the Police, but if I go with mobility they will think ‘ah, he wants to escape’. To avoid that, I prefer to wait, ”she declared.

Chávez was calm, promoted her book and even mentioned that she will finish her thesis in the prison to which she will be assigned. “It’s a difficult time for my family, but we have to be brave,” she added.

Previously, she said in court that she has “no intention of fleeing the country” and highlighted her request to reduce the amount of the bail established in this case, since her economic income has decreased and she is resuming her profession as a lawyer.

Her arrest occurs three months after she was constitutionally accused by Congress following the complaint by prosecutor Patricia Benavides. Similarly, the chamber gave the green light to suspend her in the exercise of her legislative functions, although it did not approve the same measure for Sánchez, who retains her seat in the chamber.

Last January, Betssy Chávez declared before the Subcommittee on Constitutional Accusations that she did not agree “with the measure” announced by Castillo, and ruled out having had knowledge of the content of the presidential message.

President Dina Boluarte herself has pointed her out as one of the main people responsible for the political crisis facing the country for allegedly pressuring the ex-president to make the decision to read a message announcing the dissolution of Parliament, a curfew and a government by decree.

On April 26, the supreme preparatory investigation judge Juan Carlos Checkley refused to impose the preliminary detention requested by the Prosecutor’s Office against the three former ministers, although he ordered an appearance and the payment of a bail of 100,000 soles (27,700 dollars or 25,316 euros) against them. against Chávez, 80,000 soles against Huerta and 50,000 soles against Sánchez.

The magistrate considered that there were not enough arguments for the danger of flight and obstruction of Justice. In this sense, he imposed rules of conduct on them such as not being absent from their place of residence, attending the court as many times as they are summoned and going monthly to sign a control book starting on May 2.

These measures have been ratified for Huerta and Sánchez, but revoked for Chávez, who after 3:00 p.m. was transferred to the Tacna jail for his next transfer to the capital. At all times she was smiling.
