Ronald Koeman does not rule out that he will bring Jasper Cillessen back to the Orange in September. According to the national coach, it depends on the form of the 34-year-old keeper whether he will return to the Dutch national team in the short term.
“No, it is not true that Jasper is no longer eligible for the Orange for the time being,” Koeman said during a press conference on Saturday. “We have chosen the three best keepers for this Nations League.”
“It depends on whether I bring him in quickly or not. This is the end of the season. We will soon enter the new season and then we will see. We have not chosen Jasper because of his form.”
Cillessen was the most notable absentee from Koeman’s selection for the final round in the Nations League. The NEC goalkeeper was still under the crossbar in March at the European Championship qualifiers against France (4-0 defeat) and Gibraltar (3-0 win), although he did not make a convincing impression. He has also been downright unhappy at NEC in recent months.
The final round of the Nations League will be held in the Netherlands next week. The Dutch will play against Croatia in De Kuip on Wednesday in the semi-final. The final is on Sunday and the consolation final is scheduled for Saturday.
