Joran van der Sloot has declared to be innocent of extortion against the judge in the United States. The 35-year-old Dutchman was extradited from Peru yesterday and appeared in court in the American state of Alabama today. He is suspected of extorting the parents of missing teenager Natalee Holloway.
Van der Sloot has been associated for years with the disappearance of 18-year-old Holloway in Aruba in 2005. Van der Sloot would be one of the last people she was seen with.
Holloway’s mother was also present in court today. Van der Sloot would have promised her years ago to indicate where Holloway’s body was in exchange for $ 25,000.
The judge in Alabama asked for a formal response from Van der Sloot to the allegations. Legal steps were also taken, such as the assignment of a lawyer.
Convicted of murder
Van der Sloot was temporarily extradited to the US by Peru for trial. He has been imprisoned in Peru for years for the murder of Peruvian Stephany Flores and was sentenced to 28 years in prison for that.
If Van der Sloot is found guilty of fraud in the US, he could receive a prison sentence of up to 25 years. He must first serve his remaining sentence in Peru.
