Sergio and Ruben Unac. The Governor’s brother is the new candidate to control the San Juan Executive
The governor of San Juan, Sergio Uñac, decided that his brother Rubén, current national senator, replace him in the candidacy that became vacant after the Supreme Court of the Nation prohibited him from seeking a third term as head of the Executive Power.
“I oppose but I abide. They make a political interpretation of what the provincial Constitution says and they left me out of the race,” the president complained in recent days. He was upset by the decision of the highest court because he considered that they had “political intentions” to harm him. He still has the annoyance although it is interfered by resignation.
Uñac meditated on the decision during the last days and leaned towards his brother for three specific reasons. Two of them are recognized in the province and another is reluctantly accepted by some leaders of the political space. “He is highly trusted and has a political career,” they said close to the Governor.
Sergio Uñac with Cristian Andina, the candidate for lieutenant governor that the president had chosen
The third argument is that the new candidate has the same last name: Uñac. The “Vamos San Juan” front won in the elections that were held on May 14, where the strongest blow was losing the provincial capital. That triumph helped the current president to make it clear that the mark of his management continues to be valuable and with the ability to succeed in the provincial elections.
Uñac will integrate the formula with Cristian Andino, partner chosen by the Governor. The mayor of San Martín will share the duo with a Uñac. The difference is that it will be Rubén instead of Sergio. In the ruling party of San Juan they assure that the senator measures well in the polls and that he will be competitive in the internal dispute with José Luis Gioja and in the general with Marcelo Orrego, the candidate of Together for Change.
“He is a person of permanent consultation for Sergio”, they indicated in San Juan, about the figure of the new candidate. Those who know the Governor warn that in electoral decisions he has always leaned towards people with whom he has a personal bond of affection and a trusting working relationship. He did so this time.
In the government they anticipate that Sergio Uñac will not be part of the campaign permanently, although he will collaborate. “The centrality will be the new formula,” said the Governor during a press conference that he led in the last week. It will be a very short campaign in which Rubén Uñac will seek to value the management of his brother. The continuity of a political project under the tutelage of the same family.
José Luis Gioja will compete within the Peronist front in an internal one with Rubén Uñac (NA)
Rubén Uñac was a national deputy in two periods: 2005-2007 and 2011-2015, and has been part of the Upper House since 2017, so his term as senator expires at the end of this year. That place could be occupied by Sergio Uñac, who, like so many other governors whose mandate expires, usually finds a place in the Upper House to remain within the circle of political influence.
The brand new candidate completed his primary studies at the Antonino Aberastain School, in Pocito, and completed secondary school at the Don Bosco College, in the capital of the province. He entered the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences of the National University of Córdoba, where he graduated as a Lawyer. In that province he was an active participant of the University Youth. With his law degree, he returned to San Juan and began his public activity in the provincial Legislature as advisor to the proportional deputy of Pocito, Blas Ochoa.
The brand new candidate for governor was, during the period 2007-2011, lieutenant governor of the province accompanying José Luis Gioja. At the end of his term, he handed over the post to his brother Sergio, who accompanied Gioja for four years, until he became governor. Both are estranged from Gioja, who confronts them internally and frequently criticizes them. Especially the governor of San Juan.
In parallel, Marcelo Orrego and José Luis Gioja will face a crossroads. They will have to decide whether to register as candidates in the national legislative elections. That is, if they make a double candidacy: for governor and national deputy or senator. The rumor is installed in San Juan and they do not deny it in the political circles of both.
The national lists close on June 24 and the election in San Juan is on July 2. The calendar plays a trick on them. They must decide what to do because their mandates – both are deputies – expire at the end of the year. The double candidacy would allow them to secure a place in Congress if they manage to beat Uñac.
