After a house built more than 100 years ago collapsed in the Barranco district, Mayor Jessica Vargas Gómez announced, through a statement, that they have decided to temporarily close access to the Bridge of Sighs, with the objective of safeguarding the integrity of those who transit through said area.

The municipal authority reported that it has made immediate contact with the Ministry of Culture, the Metropolitan Lima Disaster Risk Management Department and the district police station in order to secure the area, stabilize the home, collect the rubble and provide security. .

“Access to the Bridge of Sighs has been closed to avoid any emergency after the collapse, which is why we request the understanding of residents and tourists,” the statement read.

In the early hours of this last Saturday, the collapse of a house occurred, located in the Zepita jirón, a house adjacent to the access to the Bridge of Sighs and the Bajada de Baños. The collapse was due to a breakdown in a water pipe, which caused humidity on the walls that ended up giving way.

The deputy manager of Disaster Risk Management of the Municipality of Barranco, Martín Celis, pointed out that the collapse happened at 4 in the morning and that he learned that the pipe break had been repaired, but the problem continued.

“We have 200 large houses identified, which are being permanently monitored and progressively supervised,” said the municipal official.

He explained that a specialist from the Ministry of Culture went to the house to assess the level of damage to the site declared as Cultural Heritage of the Nation on December 30, 1986.
