Restricted communication from prison by serious criminals

The cabinet wants to further restrict communication between prisoners and the outside world. Minister Franc Weerwind sends a bill to the House of Representatives that makes possible additional measures against serious organized crime from prisons.

According to the proposal, the minister in the Extra Secure Institution in Vught or in Departments for Intensive Supervision in other prisons can completely prohibit contacts between detainees if there are very serious risks to the safety of society.

Supervision of conversation between detainee and lawyer

Furthermore, “visual supervision” of conversations between a detainee and a lawyer is introduced. The bill also sets a maximum of two lawyers with whom a prisoner can communicate confidentially.

According to Weerwind, the latter is not only intended to combat criminal activity. It should also benefit the safety of lawyers who are at risk of being pressured by detainees.

The minister says he wants to tackle the small group of criminals who make the Netherlands less safe even from prison.
