Socavón swallowed part of a house in Veracruz; inhabitants had to evacuate

An elderly couple from Las Choapas, in the state of Veracruz, had to evacuate their house due to the formation of a huge sinkhole, as they run the risk of being “devoured by the earth.”

And it is that since last May 13, when there was a strong electrical storm, a part of the floor collapsed inside the house, located on Adolfo López Mateos street, in the Agraria neighborhood.

According to Alex Vera, son of the inhabitants, it was not the only house affected, since some nearby properties also presented some cracks; however, one of the drainage system pipes passes through his property, which caused the hole when it collapsed.

“For many years, a domestic sewer passed under my house, to which when Hidalgo street was paved, it was easy for them to connect the public storm drain, as well as allowing neighbors to connect to that storm drain instead of being connected to the from Hidalgo street and now with the storm it collapsed,” he said through a Facebook post.

For this reason, he requested the intervention of the municipal authorities, but did not receive an immediate response.

“Today, after 3 weeks, my father’s estate is still at risk, we cannot do anything until the drainage issue is resolved. And it is impotent to sit with your hands crossed waiting for answers, while we cannot live in our house”

Thanks to the fact that the event went viral on networks, on the instructions of the mayoress of the municipality Mariela Hernández García, the Citizen Participation Committee was formed for the storm drainage construction work in the Agrarian neighborhood, a work that was not initially contemplated in the Plan General Investment (PGI).

The work will include reinforced concrete walls with number three steel in both directions and a concrete top, which will be 90 meters long, 1.50 meters wide and 1.20 meters high.

There are many types of sinkholes, most of them arise by dissolution, which means that the water dissolves the material when it is in contact with the cracks, because it rises through the voids or pre-existing spaces in the ground. When the fluid makes contact with limestone or dolomites, the dissolution intensifies causing a sudden subsidence.
