Iga Swiatek easily reached the third round of Roland Garros on Thursday. The Polish defending champion settled in an hour and a half with the American Claire Liu (6-4 and 6-0).
Swiatek started the match sloppily. The number one in the world made fifteen unnecessary errors in the first set and lost her service game twice. Liu (WTA-102) could not take advantage of this and had to leave the set win to the defending champion after almost an hour of play.
The second set went a lot easier for Swiatek, who celebrated her 22nd birthday the day before. After half an hour in the second set, the Polish player was allowed to serve for the match. She used her second match point.
Swiatek had to give up injured in the quarter-finals in Rome two weeks ago, but she seems to be doing well again in Paris. In her opening match she put the Spanish Cristina Bucsa aside 6-4 and 6-0. As a result, she is still without a set loss at the Grand Slam tournament.
In the third round, Swiatek, who won Roland Garros in 2020 and 2022, will compete against the Chinese Wang Xinyu (WTA-80).
