Ruben van Bommel exchanged MVV Maastricht for AZ on Thursday. The eighteen-year-old winger signs a four-year contract with the Eredivisionist.
Van Bommel, son of former professional Mark van Bommel and grandson of former national coach Bert van Marwijk, had an excellent season at MVV. The attacker from Meerssen scored fifteen goals and was named the Talent of the Year in the Kitchen Champion Division.
Due to his good performances, Van Bommel was coveted by clubs from home and abroad. Reportedly, PSV, Feyenoord, FC Twente, FC Utrecht, Vitesse and Go Ahead Eagles, among others, were interested.
Van Bommel may fill the gap at AZ that Jesper Karlsson will leave behind. The Swede has been linked with an outgoing transfer.
AZ finished fourth in the Eredivisie last season. MVV finished fifth in the Kitchen Champion Division. The Limburg club was eliminated in the play-offs for promotion/relegation in the first round by NAC Breda.
