Former Brazilian president Fernando Collor de Mello has been sentenced to 8 years and 10 months in prison for corruption. He would have accepted bribes as a senator.
The conviction stems from the major corruption investigation called Car Wash, which exposed longstanding bribery practices of oil giant Petrobras. It has already led to several convictions of Brazilian politicians. Collor is said to have accepted about 6 million euros from a subsidiary of Petrobras.
In 1989, 73-year-old Collor was Brazil’s first president to be elected in free elections after years of military dictatorship. He was forced to resign after three years over corruption charges. He remained active as a senator until he lost his seat in last year’s election.
Collor maintains his innocence and can still appeal. As long as that process is ongoing, he does not have to go to prison.
