Feijóo admits the “error” of the PP of considering Catalonia a “chronic problem” and challenges himself to reverse it

The leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has chosen Catalonia as his first stop after the victory of the PP on 28-M and the call for general elections. This is no coincidence, Feijóo admitted during his speech at the Cercle d’Economia business lobby, where he offered several keys on how he wants to approach Catalonia if he becomes President of the Government.

Feijóo has admitted that the PP has made mistakes in Catalonia: “We considered that Catalonia was an issue that we could not address. We consider it a chronic problem from a political point of view”, admitted the leader of the Blues. He also recalled one of the conversations he had with the former PP minister and candidate for the Generalitat Josep Piqué, who died two months ago: “We came to the conclusion that if you think you’re right, but people don’t follow you, then you You will have to rethink not so much what you think, but how you explain it”, he indicated, making clear the break with the approaches of a PP that has never come to fit in in Catalonia, which led him to resignation.

Now Feijóo proposes to open a new stage in which Catalonia will be a priority for the PP in the Government. “Catalonia is a basic engine of our country. If Catalonia is not doing well, Spain is not going well ”, he launched. He has proposed returning to a policy that overcomes “the division and confrontations that block groups and territories so much”, alluding to the independence movement, and centering Catalan politics on “management”.

For this, it has committed to a “calm and serene” change, which deals with how to make good use of public money and not “how to decriminalize the misuse of public money”, alluding to the repeal of the crime of sedition and the reduction of the embezzlement penalties of the Government. The new PP will also focus on job creation, increased legal security and the growth of the Catalan economy, Feijóo has assured, who has indicated that they will not continue to be “absorbed” in issues “of always, led by those of always”.

In short, he has advocated for the interests of the majority of Catalans to be a priority for the Government of Spain, which he already sees in his hands. “Let’s forget conformism and start a policy of reforms”, he summarized in his speech at the Cercle d’Economia, where this Thursday the attendance of the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, who always closes the days of the Cercle, a tradition that It has been broken by the early calling of elections.

The leader of the PP recalled that he has the “advantage” of being born in a “peripheral place”, which makes him understand that what happens in Spain is not what happens in Madrid: “Very important things happen in Madrid, but it is not Spain, it is a part of Spain”, Feijóo remarked, in a speech that evokes that of his first act in Catalonia -also in the Cercle d’Economia- as president of the PP, in which he bet because “Catalan nationality ” regain his leadership.

“I have the advantage of knowing that Galician and Catalan are Spanish languages, so a person who speaks Catalan does not have a problem with you, they simply express themselves in their native or habitual language,” defended the PP leader, who has assured that as Galician president “he has never” expressed himself in public in Spanish, although he has qualified that if someone spoke to him in Spanish he would respond in the same language.

“Castilian is a very powerful tool in Catalonia”, added Feijóo, who has opined that the problem with Catalan is not Catalan or Castilian, it is English.

The leader of the PP has thus set out his vision regarding Catalonia, where he has launched a reflection against the independence movement: “The problem of a people is to think that all the problems that happen to them are always the fault of others and the good thing they do is exclusively as a consequence of their decisions, I think this is a serious mistake”, he asserted.
